Painting from the Trunk of my Car

Painting outside with the trunk of my car as a studio

Some places make me want to stop and paint. Cazenovia Lake is one of them—the big sky, the shapes of the land, and the quiet water with its patterns and shifts of color.

And my studio? Often, it’s the trunk of my car! :) My paints, brushes, a sketchbook and a few canvases to get me started.

Usually I begin with a pencil or charcoal sketch. Sometimes I go straight to a small painting. These little studies help me really look. I love getting lost in it all.

I’m drawn to the way the tree masses meet the sky, how the shoreline curves around the water, and how many colors there are in a seemingly quiet lake.

I like painting quickly.
I try so hard to focus in order to finish each painting while Im right there.
Sometimes I get frustrated, tired… sometimes Im in a groove.
Last time i got bright yellow paint all over me and immediately went home in a huff.
No matter what I cant wait to paint each time I do.

I keep returning to the same places again and again and again. It’s the same scenes but every time is something different. Different light, time of day, season, weather, colors… Not only are they the places where i can park my car, but they are the places that have been staying with me for the last few years.

Painting these places… make me happy.

be froghappy!
